Avalanches in the French Alps - three skiers die

Three skiers have died after avalanches in the French Alps, according to media reports. In the La Plagne ski resort, a 50-year-old Briton was buried under an avalanche of snow, according to a statement from the resort. 52 rescue workers, avalanche dogs and a helicopter were deployed, but it took 50 minutes before the man could be found under 2.5 meters of snow, French media reported. The avalanche was triggered outside the official ski slope in the Prodkamm area. In the period from Saturday lunchtime to this Sunday morning, around 30 traffic accidents occurred in wintry road conditions in the canton of St.Gallen.

In Rapperswil-Jona, shortly after 6.30 p.m., there was a traffic accident between a motorized cart and a six-year-old girl on Bühlstrasse. A 41-year-old man was driving along Bühlstrasse in the direction of Allmeindstrasse to clear snow.

Shortly before 8 p.m., a 21-year-old man was driving his car in Oberuzwil on Wilerstrasse in the direction of Schwarzenbach. The car skidded and crashed into a correctly parked car in front of a restaurant. The collision caused the car to swerve and hit three other parked vehicles. Property damage amounting to over 70,000 Swiss francs was caused.

Between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m., two accidents occurred on the A13 highway in Rüthi and Sennwald. The car of a 28-year-old skidded and crashed into the central crash barrier.

A strong area of low pressure will move across Central Europe from the British Isles from Sunday evening and will bring changeable weather with wind, rain and snow until at least Wednesday. The precipitation will be particularly heavy in the Alps.

According to the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF), more than one meter of fresh snow is expected in some areas above around 1400 meters between Sunday evening and Tuesday evening. The avalanche risk will increase accordingly: Danger level four is expected in western Valais and along the northern Alpine ridge. MeteoSwiss expects mild winter despite weaker polar vortex

According to MeteoSwiss, speculation about a "winter of the century" is premature. The Federal Office of Meteorology is currently expecting a mild winter, according to an inquiry from Keystone-SDA.

There are currently increasing reports that a rare weather phenomenon over the North Pole could bring a harsh winter to Europe and Switzerland. This is known as sudden stratospheric warming (SSW).

Normally, a strong polar vortex holds the cold air over the Arctic. If it weakens, temperatures in the stratosphere, the layer of air at an altitude of around 10 to 50 kilometers, can rise by up to 50 degrees within a few days. This can change the polar jet stream and increase the likelihood of cold spells in several regions of the world.

MeteoSwiss confirms that the polar vortex over the Arctic is currently weakening and deforming at an altitude of around 30 kilometers. The temperature in this layer of the stratosphere is likely to rise significantly over the next two weeks.

According to MeteoSwiss, however, the consequences of this for the winter weather in Switzerland remain to be seen. The decisive factor is whether the changes in the stratosphere will even make it into the troposphere - the layer of air that is relevant for our weather.

Nothing has therefore changed in the seasonal outlook so far: according to MeteoSwiss, the probability of a cold winter in Switzerland overall remains rather low for November to January. Few deviations from the long-term average are expected for December, but a high probability of above-average temperatures for January and February.

Minus temperatures even in the lowlands

Switzerland has had a cold night. Just ten days ago, a new November temperature record of 23.5 degrees was measured in Delsberg JU. In the early hours of Sunday morning, the thermometer in Delsberg showed minus 9.1 degrees.

It was particularly cold in La Brévine NE on Sunday night: the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss) recorded minus 26.3 degrees after 2.00 am. The measuring station is located at 1042 meters above sea level.

It was slightly warmer - if you can call it warm - in Buffalora GR with minus 23.7 degrees at around 1970 meters above sea level and in Samedan GR at around 1700 meters above sea level with minus 20.3 degrees.

It was also freezing cold at lower altitudes. MeteoSwiss recorded minus 14.5 degrees in Marsens FR (around 700 meters above sea level), for example. In Langnau im Emmental BE, the thermometer fell to minus 13.1 degrees. In Thun BE, it was minus 11.2 degrees last night and the measuring station in Kloten ZH recorded minus 9.1 degrees.

For Sunday afternoon, MeteoSwiss predicted temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees in the lowlands of German-speaking Switzerland. A trip to Ticino is unlikely to be worthwhile for those seeking warmth, with MeteoSwiss forecasting temperatures in the region of 6 degrees.

The consequences for Central Europe and Switzerland would be an increased likelihood of an easterly wind bringing frosty air from Russia. This means more snow at higher altitudes, colder temperatures at mid-altitudes and longer periods of frost in the lowlands, depending on pressure levels.

Meteorologists expect the effects to be felt from the end of November until well into December, possibly even into the new year. If a high pressure system settles over Russia at the same time, this will intensify the cold. Despite no guarantee of a harsh winter, the probability of an early and significant winter offensive in Switzerland increases significantly. The reason for this is low pressure system "Amy", which has formed on the east coast of North America and is now heading for Central Europe. Possible consequences include rising water levels in streams and otherwise dry ditches. Local flooding, for example in underpasses, underground garages or cellars, cannot be ruled out either.

Storm front hits the canton of Zug - scaffolding and trees topple over

On Monday evening, a heavy storm front passed over the canton of Zug. Within just under two hours, the Zug police control center received around 60 reports.

The municipality of Cham was particularly affected. In Hagendorn, numerous cellars and garages flooded, trees were uprooted and building barriers were blown over. Trees fell onto parked cars on Gewerbestrasse and St. Jakobstrasse.
