Axpo is opening a photo exhibition at over 1800 meters above sea level in the access tunnel to the Limmern pumped storage plant in the canton of Glarus. "Waterwards" is the highest and longest photo gallery in Switzerland, according to a press release issued on Wednesday.

Hikers in the region can view large-format images by Swiss landscape photographer Markus Bühler on the hiking trail from the mountain station of the cable car to Lake Limmern. The almost three-kilometer-long tunnel is freely accessible during the hiking season - from around mid-June to October.

Fifteen pictures of Axpo hydropower plants are exhibited in five different niches. The gallery is complemented by interactive information boards on hydropower and electricity supply.

100 percent humidity

The humidity in the tunnel is 100 percent all year round. For this reason, the photographs had to be printed on particularly durable and insensitive material, according to a statement.

Axpo is reportedly the largest operator of hydropower plants in Switzerland with around 60 facilities. Each year, the company produces around 11 terawatt hours of electricity from hydropower - including shareholdings - which corresponds to around a third of total Swiss hydropower production.

Around 550 Axpo employees work in the operation, maintenance and renovation of hydropower plants.
