The canton of Basel-Stadt should commit itself to the safe supply of high-quality medicines to the population at home and abroad. This is the demand of the popular initiative "Pharma for all" launched on Friday by 12 organizations.

The initiative is a response to the worsening crisis in the supply of medicines, the initiative committee announced. This includes the exploding prices for new medicines, which are putting healthcare systems under financial pressure.

Specifically, according to the text of the initiative, 2.5 percent of tax revenue in the canton of Basel-Stadt should be paid into a pharmaceutical fund each year. This is expected to amount to 70 million francs per year. The canton would use the money to support charitable projects in this area.

The initiative is supported by the SP Basel-Stadt, Basta, Vpod Basel, Unia Basel and the Forum for Critical Social Work, among others.
