A 1-kilometer-long fence with solar modules is to be installed along the Basel streetcar line between Reinach and Münchenstein. According to the contractor, this is the longest solar fence in the world.

The first construction phase along the Baselland Transport (BLT) streetcar tracks is currently being completed. The photovoltaic modules will now be installed, as the company Solarzaun, based in Elsau (ZH), announced on Tuesday.

As part of the route renewal, BLT needed a fence on the route in question. This will have 400 PV modules that convert solar radiation into electricity on both sides. According to the communiqué, they will have a maximum output of 194 kilowatt peak per square meter (kWp) in future. With a frame system in basalt grey, the solar fence will blend in well with the cityscape and at the same time use the streetcar infrastructure to generate energy.

The principle of using rail traffic for solar energy was also applied this year in Buttes, Neuchâtel. The first train line with solar modules between the tracks was inaugurated there in April of this year. Zurich Airport is also currently testing the use of solar fences.
