Preventing companies from participating in the market without evidence violates the rules of fair competition and is blatant protectionism, said China's foreign affairs spokesperson Guo Jiakun in Beijing. Brussels was ignoring the fact that Chinese companies offered safe and high-quality products.
The People's Republic is seriously concerned, said Guo. China is calling on the EU to stop pursuing the "wrong path of protectionism". Otherwise, China would take necessary measures to protect the rights and interests of Chinese companies, he warned.
Recommendation from Brussels
The previous day, the EU Commission had published a legislative proposal that would allow it to prohibit the use of technology from particularly risky foreign companies with a corresponding legal basis in the last instance. Neither companies nor countries are named in the Commission's draft.
For years, Brussels has been recommending that member states do not use technology from Huawei and ZTE in mobile networks for security reasons. The law proposed by the EU Commission would therefore affect the business of these companies.
