According to the police, the men had clashed on Saturday afternoon in the Sophie-Charlotte-Platz subway station in the west of Berlin. Then one is said to have attacked the other with a knife and injured him so badly that he died.

The police spokesman said that the attacker then fled to Schlossstrasse, which leads from Sophie-Charlotte-Platz to Charlottenburg Palace. There he is said to have threatened police officers with a raised knife.

The police then had to use their firearms and shot the man. He was taken to hospital. The background was still completely unclear.

The Sophie-Charlotte-Platz subway station is on subway line 2, which runs from the west of Berlin via Potsdamer Platz and Alexanderplatz to Pankow in the east of Berlin.
