The security and defense partnership sought by the Federal Council with the EU is stalling. In Brussels, the EU states do not want to conclude any further partnerships at present.

No additional security and defense partnerships are planned in the near future, a person familiar with the matter told the Keystone-SDA news agency in Brussels. Only negotiations already underway would be pursued further, a second diplomatic source said.

The State Secretariat for Security Policy (Sepos) stated on request that no date had been set for formal exploratory talks. Initial informal talks at a technical level have taken place, a spokesperson said.

The Federal Council announced at the end of June that it wanted to start exploratory talks with the EU on this matter. Such a partnership is a prerequisite for possible joint procurements in the field of armaments.
