The facility will be built on a former industrial site in the immediate vicinity of the transmission grid and will be used for the temporary storage of electricity from renewable sources, according to a press release issued on Wednesday. BKW's investment costs amounted to over 200 million euros. Construction of the plant near Dortmund is scheduled to begin in 2026, with commissioning scheduled for 2028.
At the same time, BKW is participating together with two other partners in the special purpose vehicle Trianel Batteriepark Waltrop GmbH & Co. KG, which will create the framework for the entire large-scale battery park in Waltrop.
In the first expansion stage, this will have a total output of 900 megawatts and a storage capacity of 1800 megawatt hours. The project still has to be approved by the German Federal Cartel Office.
In the area of large-scale batteries, BKW intends to build a park with a capacity of over 500 megawatts by 2030. "With the project in Waltrop, we are taking a major step towards a more flexible and stable energy system in Europe," BKW CEO Robert Itschner was quoted as saying in the press release.
