Block 2 of the Beznau nuclear power plant in Döttingen AG is back on the grid after an overhaul. As announced by the energy company Axpo, the operator, the reactor was connected to the grid at the weekend following approval by the supervisory authority Ensi.

During the overhaul since the beginning of August, the focus has been on maintenance work, recurring tests and inspections, as Axpo also announced on Monday.

As usual, integral system tests were carried out. Of the 121 fuel elements in total, 20 were replaced with new ones and inserted into the reactor core.

The Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (Ensi) had previously announced that the weld seams of the two feedwater tanks of Unit 2 had been subjected to extensive tests based on the findings of steel samples from the feedwater tanks of Unit 1. Where necessary, fracture mechanics calculations were carried out, which Ensi said it accepted.
