After days of searching, the body of a 55-year-old man from Germany has been found in Lake Como in northern Italy. The body was discovered at a depth of around 220 meters by a remote-controlled diving robot and then brought up a long way, according to the fire department of the municipality of Lecco. He was then rescued by two divers. The man from Bühl in Baden-Württemberg died while trying to rescue his two children from the water.

Man was on a boat with his wife and children

On Monday, the innkeeper, his wife and two children were out on a rented boat near Dorio on the eastern shore of the lake, which is very popular with German vacationers. For unknown reasons, the children went overboard. The man then jumped into the water himself. The children were brought to safety. However, the father never resurfaced. It is assumed that he was caught by a current.

Lake Como is very deep at this point. The search was also hampered by adverse weather conditions, according to the fire department. The body is now at the disposal of the judicial authorities for the necessary investigations, it said.

Shock in Baden-Württemberg

According to Mayor Hubert Schnurr, the man with Italian roots was widely known in Bühl as a restaurateur and organizer of after-work parties. Schnurr recently spoke of a "huge shock": "The dismay is not only great in the town, but in the entire region," the politician told the German Press Agency on Thursday.

Similar case ended tragically in 2024

The case is reminiscent of a similar accident in July 2024, when a 51-year-old German died after trying to help his son swim in Lake Como. The boy survived, but his father was later found at a depth of more than 200 meters.

Lake Como is located around 80 kilometers north of Milan and is one of the deepest lakes in Europe with a depth of more than 400 meters. Changeable winds can create strong waves, especially in the northern part.
