The British energy group BP has returned to net profit in the second quarter. It thus clearly stood out from the development of other oil companies.

The profit amounted to 1.63 billion dollars, after BP had posted a loss of 129 million dollars in the same quarter of the previous year, as the company announced on Tuesday. Group CEO Murray Auchincloss spoke of an "excellent quarter - both operationally and strategically".

One of the main reasons for the improvement was the significant decrease in extraordinary charges, which were incurred in the previous year due to high price fluctuations for liquefied natural gas (LNG). However, the adjusted profit - excluding special items - was almost 15 percent lower than in the previous year.

This puts BP in a better position than other industry giants such as Totalenergies, Exxonmobil and Chevron, which recently had to report significant falls in profits. Only Shell was able to post a slight increase. The entire sector is suffering from falling oil and gas prices and weakening demand, burdened by trade conflicts, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and production increases by Opec+.

Target of takeover speculation

BP, which recently appointed the Irishman Albert Manifold as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors, has been criticized for years for disappointing results and has been the target of takeover speculation on several occasions - particularly by Shell. In February, the company turned its back on its ambitious climate strategy and is once again focusing more on oil and gas.

BP also announced extensive job cuts. Incloss also held out the prospect of a comprehensive review of the portfolio and cost base in the coming months. BP shares rose by around 1.4 percent in London this morning.
