British parliament to save steelworks from closure

The British parliament is meeting today, Saturday, for an extraordinary session to save the steelworks in the north of England from closure. According to Prime Minister Starmer, MPs are to pass an emergency bill to allow the government to take control of the British Steel plant in Scunthorpe. This is intended to prevent the Chinese owners from ceasing production.

According to British media reports, the planned law could pave the way for the nationalization of the company. According to the BBC, the owners had previously stated that the blast furnaces were "no longer financially viable". Closing the plant could therefore lead to the loss of several thousand jobs.

Starmer said in a statement that he would always act "in the national interest" to preserve British jobs.
