A broad parliamentary alliance reaffirmed its support for the new law on electronic identity in Bern on Thursday. The vote will take place on September 28.

The alliance emphasized that the new e-ID cards are a "secure, state-run and forward-looking infrastructure for Switzerland". The group is made up of parliamentarians from the SVP, FDP, Center, GLP, SP and Greens.

At the media conference, the Council members emphasized that Swiss politicians have rarely been as united as they are on this law and that this is evidence of the "national importance" of the bill. The Alliance also emphasized that the e-ID would only be issued and administered by the Confederation and would be free and voluntary for everyone. Internet users will have full control over their data.

The E-ID Law No Committee, the Friends of the Constitution, Mass-Voll and the Pirate Party, among others, had successfully launched a referendum against the bill.
