CPE will invest the equivalent of 282 million Swiss francs in the expansion, as Burger King's parent company RBI announced on Monday. Burger King has been operating in China since 2005 - but its competitors McDonald's and KFC are far more present there.
There are currently around 1250 Burger King restaurants in China. This number is set to double by 2030, rising to over 4,000 by 2030, according to the Canadian company Restaurant Brands International (RBI). It has owned the Florida-based fast food chain since 2014.
According to figures from last year, competitor McDonald's has more than 6,800 outlets in China, while Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) currently has more than 12,600. RBI CEO Joshua Kobza said on Monday that China remains "one of the most exciting long-term opportunities in the world" for Burger King. The Chinese CPE will hold an 83 percent stake in the joint venture called Burger King China, RBI announced.
The US coffee house chain Starbucks also announced last week that it would sell a majority stake of 60 percent in its China business to an investment company in Hong Kong, with which Starbucks is setting up a joint venture. Starbucks has thus changed its strategy after 26 years on the Chinese market - the US company has recently lost market share to its local competitors.
