Severe bushfires have broken out in the US state of New York. Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency to mobilize resources, as she announced on the X platform. The Pine Barrens - an area overgrown with pine trees - on Long Island are particularly affected.

The fire department is in action. The military is supporting the firefighting efforts with helicopters from the air. The weather service warned that the wind could fan the fires further. There were initially no reports of casualties.
