According to media reports, California Governor Gavin Newsom intends to file a lawsuit over US President Donald Trump's far-reaching special tariffs. "President Trump's unlawful tariffs are causing chaos for California families, businesses and our economy - driving up prices and threatening jobs," said a statement from the Democrat, which was quoted by several US media outlets, including Politico and the Los Angeles Times. "We are standing up for American families who can't afford to let this mess continue."

The lawsuit was reportedly due to be filed in federal court in California later on Wednesday. Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta are arguing that the imposition of tariffs must be approved by Congress. A statement from Bonta, which was also quoted, said that the "chaotic and arbitrary imposition" of the measures was "not only highly troubling, but also illegal".

California is one of the world's largest economies in its own right - agriculture and the technology sector are particularly affected by the special tariffs. In the meantime, numerous lawsuits have been filed against Trump and his government for various reasons - many of which involve California.
