Hunters in the canton of Bern are to shoot more female red deer. This is the result of the 2024/2025 hunting plan published by the Canton of Bern on Monday.

A total of 1076 red deer may be shot this year, practically the same number as in 2023. The focus is on female deer: 730 animals are to be shot, compared to 547 last year.

The red deer population is still too high regionally, the canton wrote as justification. This has a negative impact on the forest and agriculture. Deer influence tree regeneration by eating buds and shoots and peeling trees.
