The Zurich cantonal government wants to promote not only films, but also innovative audiovisual formats such as games and virtual reality: From summer 2025, it would like to use a total of CHF 4.5 million over three years for this purpose.

The cantonal government is asking the cantonal council to approve annual contributions of CHF 1.5 million to the Filmstiftung. The money is to be taken from the cultural fund.

The canton and city of Zurich established the Filmstiftung in 2004. However, it only promotes filmmaking in the narrower sense, as the cantonal council criticized in a postulate in 2020. The cantonal government now wants to implement the demand that "digital culture with its new and innovative audiovisual forms of presentation" should also receive public funding.

The Filmstiftung is therefore also to promote digital culture in a second, independent business area. According to the press release, this includes "innovative audiovisual content and narrative forms that make use of formats such as virtual reality or other interactive narrative forms". Games are also included as storytelling formats.

As part of the three-year pilot project, "needs-based and effective promotion" is to be established from summer 2025. In addition, questions regarding the interfaces between culture and business are to be clarified.

The cantonal government describes the Filmstiftung as a success: "There is no other place in Switzerland today with comparable training, funding and production structures for filmmaking."

There is also a strong, dynamic scene in the areas of new media, games and media art in the canton of Zurich. This should now also receive appropriate funding instruments via the Filmstiftung.
