After the devastating storm a year ago, protective and corrective measures are needed on the Maggia in Ticino. On the one hand, the watercourses should be given enough space to cause less damage during floods. On the other hand, settlements need to be protected.

Measures are planned in four zones in the upper Maggia Valley, explained the head of the Ticino Office for Watercourses, Laurent Filippini, when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency.

Protective measures are needed in the settlement area of Prato Sornico, where the Maggia had torn away the ice rink. The school also needs to be protected from possible future floods. Where necessary, dams would be built on the edge of the floodplain or flood zone, said Filippini.

Corrections are also planned in the Piano di Peccia area along the Ofima compensation basin and at the mouth of the Peccia river and the Soveneda stream.

Three farms have to relocate

In Sant'Antonio di Peccia, agricultural land is to be made usable again and the town center is to be protected, as Filippini went on to explain. The watercourses there must also be given sufficient space for future water and sediment transport.

Further smaller measures are planned in the lower Lavizzara Valley, where the river has caused erosion. Specifically, the course of the river will be re-profiled where necessary. Important freight and transport routes will be secured with protective structures - but always in coordination with the reclamation of agricultural land, says Filippini.

In addition to these interventions, a resettlement process is underway for three farms in the Maggia Valley, as they are located in the so-called danger zone.
