The canton of Valais is warning of flooding and debris flows in tributaries of the Rhone on Saturday afternoon and into Sunday night. The water levels in the Rhone are also expected to rise further.

Numerous thunderstorms will cross the Valais on Saturday afternoon and into Sunday night. According to the weather forecasts, large, very dynamic thunderstorm cells with "locally violent events" may develop, as the cantonal management body (KFO) announced on Saturday morning.

The precipitation could be very heavy locally, especially in the side valleys of the left bank of the Rhone. The Entremont, the Val d'Hérens, the Goms, the Binntal and the Simplon region are likely to be particularly affected. However, other regions could also be affected according to the KFO.

Do not film or take photos

The melting snow and waterlogged soils will also lead to a significant rise in the tributaries and the Rhone, which could lead to debris flows and flooding. There is a considerable risk of flooding from the mouth of the Saltina to Lake Geneva.

The KFO therefore warns against staying near watercourses. Drivers should not park on bridges and should refrain from filming and photographing severe weather events in order to avoid putting themselves in danger. The population should generally "restrict their freedom of movement".

A level 4 flood warning is also currently in place for Lake Constance and Lake Obersee in north-eastern Switzerland, and the population is urged to stay away from bodies of water.
