The cantons are extremely dissatisfied with the Federal Council's austerity package. They say it jeopardizes Switzerland's ability to innovate, shifts costs to the cantons and calls popular decisions into question.
They also have an interest in ensuring that the federal budget is in balance, the Conference of Cantonal Governments (KdK) announced on Friday. However, the restructuring of the federal finances should not be achieved by unilaterally shifting the burden at the expense of the cantons. This would not benefit taxpayers.
The cantons are particularly annoyed that they were not included in the federal government's preparatory work, even though they are heavily affected by it. The KdK is therefore calling on the Federal Council to discuss the savings measures with the cantons once again and make improvements before adopting the dispatch.
