Just over a month before the vote on the SVP's "10 million Swiss" initiative, cantons, municipalities and cities have presented their "no" arguments. In their eyes, accepting the referendum would have serious consequences.
The Conference of Cantonal Governments (KDK), the Swiss Association of Cities (SSV) and the Swiss Association of Communes (SGV) announced on Monday that rigidly limiting the population would restrict the public sector's scope for action and create more problems than it solves. The strength of Switzerland's federal system lies in solving problems at the right level and acting as close to the people as possible.
Immigration does bring challenges. However, the cantons, cities and municipalities have tried and tested instruments at their disposal to deal with growth. The primary goal remains a high quality of life for everyone. This includes, for example, efficient mobility, fewer traffic jams, sufficient living space without urban sprawl and a well-developed infrastructure.
