One person is dead and another is in mortal danger after a car allegedly drove into a group of people in the Australian metropolis of Melbourne. According to the local police, the car drove onto a sidewalk shortly after 5 p.m. (local time) and hit the two pedestrians. The as yet unidentified person died at the scene of the accident, while the other was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. One man has been arrested and is being questioned. The exact circumstances are still unclear and the investigation is ongoing.
According to the Australian broadcaster 9News, the incident took place in the vicinity of the Supanova comic fair, where thousands of visitors are said to have been present. The police had set up a larger crime scene. According to the broadcaster, witnesses reported that the car had driven into a group of people at high speed.
