Firefighters brought the blaze at Hasrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital Dhaka under control. However, the airport's cargo complex with all the imported goods stored there had fallen victim to the flames, airport chief S. M. Ragib Samad told the AFP news agency on Sunday.

According to government sources, an investigation has been launched into suspected arson.

According to the emergency services, 37 fire departments and security forces battled the flames for hours on Saturday. "The fire spread to every corner - I don't know if any goods were spared," said an exhausted firefighter in an ash-covered uniform.

Thick black smoke over the runway had forced the authorities to temporarily suspend air traffic. According to the airport, air traffic was able to resume late on Saturday evening.

The cause of the fire was initially unclear. However, the Bangladeshi government announced a "thorough" investigation into the cause of the accident. "Any credible evidence of sabotage or arson will result in a swift and decisive response."

Many clothes burnt

Large quantities of fabrics, clothing, medicines and other imported goods were stored in the airport's cargo complex. Business associations warned of damage running into millions. According to the National Board of Revenue, a damage assessment has been initiated.

Bangladesh is the second largest clothing producer in the world. Textile and garment production accounts for around 80 percent of the country's exports.
