Fools and witches, bells and brooms: The Venezuelan "Germany of the Caribbean" has celebrated its traditional Alemannic carnival parade. Around 5,000 people took part in the celebrations in Colonia Tovar, which was founded by German immigrants, according to local media reports.

Masked people in Jokili costumes, a tradition that was introduced in Colonia Tovar 50 years ago, paraded through the streets. The jester figures are an old carnival custom in Endingen am Kaiserstuhl in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg.

Colonia Tovar was founded in 1843 by German immigrants as the result of a targeted settlement program by the Venezuelan government. The town is located in the coastal cordillera around 70 kilometers west of the Venezuelan capital Caracas. Half-timbered houses characterize the cityscape, which is unusual for South America.
