The so-called SRG initiative received little support at the delegates' meeting in Grenchen SO on Saturday. Those present voted heavily against it with 216 votes against, 3 in favor and 14 abstentions.
TV and radio fees have already been reduced four times in the past eight years, noted Simon Stadler, National Councillor for Uri. Further starvation of the SRG would be unfair. Instead of having to buy sporting events and films from international streaming providers, he would rather invest in a Swiss broadcaster.
Other votes also stated that the SRG is "our bulwark against fake news" and forms the "cement for social and cultural cohesion". Stadler also spoke of this: the canton of Uri only appears in other media companies based in the cities when there are scandals or car accidents
The initiative, which was rejected by the center, demands that TV and radio fees be reduced from the current CHF 335 per year per household to CHF 200. All companies should be exempt from the fee. Swiss voters will decide on this on March 8, 2026.
The climate fund initiative will also be put to the ballot box on the same Sunday. The center also recommends rejecting this. After a brief discussion, the delegates voted against the initiative "For a fair energy and climate policy: investing for prosperity, jobs and the environment" by 180 votes against to 40 votes in favor.
