Charlotte Casiraghi (39), daughter of Caroline of Monaco, is often in the spotlight at skin couture fashion shows. Now the philosophy graduate and niece of Prince Albert II of Monaco has published her first book. At just under 400 pages, the weighty work "La Fêlure" ("The Tear", published by Julliard) is a literary and philosophical exploration of the fragility of existence, in which the Monegasque draws on the works of a number of writers.

Charlotte Casiraghi, who lost her father in a racing boat accident at the age of four, also gives an insight into the fractures between the glittering façade of her jet-set life and her true existence in the book. "I was often reduced to a glossy image, to a life full of dreams and privilege. It can be reduced to a few clichés of balls or fashion shows," writes Casiraghi in the foreword to her book.

Image conceals personality

"But everything that could be important for me, my convictions or my personality is almost never revealed by this image that is attached to me." She is required to "embody a certain number of stereotypes associated with my birth into a princely family". Her book undoubtedly responds to "the need to break through this surface".

Charlotte Casiraghi is one of Caroline of Monaco's three children with her second husband, the Italian Stefano Casiraghi, whom she married in 1983. On October 3, 1990, he was killed in a racing boat accident near Monaco. Charlotte Casiraghi has long since become the mother of two boys herself. As she told the newspaper "Libération" in an interview on the occasion of the book's publication, she has recently moved to Paris with a new partner.
