China's economy grew slightly faster than expected in the first quarter of this year. According to the statistics office in Beijing, preliminary growth was 5.4 percent compared to the same period last year.

Sheng Laiyun, Vice Commissioner of China's National Bureau of Statistics, spoke of a good start and stronger demand. Analysts had previously expected growth of around 5.2 percent. China has therefore made a solid start to the economic year. Beijing has once again set itself an ambitious growth target of around five percent for 2025.
However, the trade conflict with the US, which escalated in April, is likely to affect the world's second-largest economy and will be felt more clearly in the coming quarter in particular. Observers expect economic growth to weaken from the second quarter onwards.
So far, China's government has been trying to boost consumption with a trade-in program for old appliances or cars. The People's Republic has been struggling for some time with weak demand, pressure from deflation and a swirling real estate crisis that is slowing down the economic engine.
