Imports increased by 25.3 percent, according to the customs authority in Beijing. The bottom line was a trade surplus of 84.82 billion dollars.

Analysts had previously expected exports to grow by 6.5 percent, following growth of just 2.5 percent in the previous month. Experts had expected imports to increase by 20.4 percent.

The publication date of China's latest trade data coincides with the run-up to US President Donald Trump's planned visit to Beijing next week.

One year after the escalation in the trade conflict with the US, China's exports to the United States rose by 11.3% in April. Imports from there increased by 9 percent. China's exports to Germany were up 7.6 percent year-on-year, while imports from Germany rose by 1 percent.
