China's foreign trade increased significantly more than expected at the start of the year. According to the customs authority in Beijing, exports in January and February rose by 21.8 percent in US dollar terms compared to the same period last year.

Imports also increased significantly by 19.8 percent. This resulted in a trade surplus of 213.6 billion US dollars.

Analysts had previously expected an increase of just over 7% in exports in the first two months of the year compared to the same period last year. Market observers had expected China's imports to increase by 6.3 percent.

Due to the Spring Festival, China usually publishes its foreign trade figures for the first two months of the year together in order to avoid distortions. The rapid growth in Chinese foreign trade came about before the start of the Israeli-American attack on Iran, which is now also having an impact on global trade.
