According to the statistics office in Beijing, the corresponding Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) stood at 50.1 points in December, just above the threshold of 50 points above which statisticians speak of an expansion of activity in companies.
The leading indicator, which is important for analysts and decision-makers, thus remained above this threshold for the third month in a row. In view of China's long stumbling economic development, there are increasing signs of stabilization.
In the non-manufacturing sector, which includes the service and construction industries, the PMI reached 52.2 points in December, significantly higher than analysts had expected. According to the statisticians, orders in the construction sector rose, for example.
Beijing wants to tackle problems
The world's second-largest economy has been struggling with a real estate crisis and weak domestic demand for some time. The export-oriented nation is also facing disputes with important trading partners such as the EU and the US. Donald Trump will also become the new US president in January, which could mean further tariffs on Chinese products.
In response to the problems, Beijing has already decided to relax lending rules and exchange programs. The government also wants to boost demand by providing aid for people in the lower income brackets and improving social security.
