At 45 percent, the city of Fribourg must pay the largest share for the remediation of the La Pila landfill site. The successor to the former operating company is responsible for 25 percent. This has been confirmed by the Federal Court.

The canton of Fribourg will pay the remaining 30 percent. This includes a 5 percent share attributable to unknown polluters. This key was determined by the Directorate for Spatial Development, Infrastructure, Mobility and the Environment (Rimu) of the Canton of Fribourg. It relates to the costs to date of around CHF 14 million.
The Federal Supreme Court dismissed the appeals of the city and the successor company in a ruling published on Wednesday. The canton had determined the cost key on the basis of a detailed analysis.
The remediation is necessary because of the polychlorinated biphenyls found in the landfill. These are toxic and carcinogenic organic chlorine compounds. The total cost of the remediation amounts to around 150 million Swiss francs.
