The city of Zurich is removing a car lane from Kasernenstrasse near the Gessnerbrücke bridge, creating space for an almost four-metre-wide cycle lane. This should make the junction safer for cyclists.

The intersection of Kasernenstrasse, Lagerstrasse and Gessnerbrücke near the Sihlpost/HB streetcar stop is a hotspot for accidents involving cyclists, as the city of Zurich announced on Monday. The removal of a car lane should ensure greater safety.
The straight-ahead lane for cars between the military bridge and the intersection will be removed. Until now, the cycle lane was located between two car lanes. The new cycle lane will be 3.7 meters wide and will be located on the right-hand side of the road.
Car traffic will be on the left, but will only be able to turn right onto the Gessnerbrücke. Cyclists can continue in all directions and will have their own green phase at the traffic lights.
Implementation of the measure will start on Tuesday. The city expects a significant increase in bicycle traffic around the intersection of Kasernenstrasse, Lagerstrasse and Gessnerbrücke when the bicycle ramp to the city tunnel opens in spring 2025.
