- A gang of smugglers attempts to illegally transport drugs to Spain using a self-built submarine.
- The Spanish coastguard brings the drug submarine to the coast of Cádiz and arrests four Colombian couriers.
- However, the authorities are unable to seize the drugs because the couriers are able to sink their submarine before it is seized.
The bay around the port of Cádiz on the Atlantic side in southern Spain is known for its drug smuggling gangs. Gangs use boats here to unload their multi-million dollar drug cargo on the coast.
Homemade submarines are often used for this purpose.
On Wednesday, the Spanish coastguard intercepted one of these drug submarines around 450 kilometers west of Cádiz. The Colombian crew of four then sank the submarine along with the drug ballast. The crew was rescued and subsequently arrested.
Second major case within three days
On June 22, three days before the current incident, the Spanish coastguard also pursued a drug boat in a parallel operation. In this case, customs investigators were able to seize 900 kilograms of cocaine.
