The contract is worth several hundred million Swiss francs across all phases, as Implenia announced on Wednesday. The construction group signed a contract with the Swedish nuclear energy company Svensk Kärnbränslehantering Aktiebolag (SKB) for the construction of the first underground section.
The project includes an access tunnel, vertical shafts for ventilation and an elevator. According to the information provided, the planning phase will begin in the fall of 2025, with completion planned for 2033.
In the long term, SKB plans to expand the repository to an underground system with around 66 kilometers of tunnels. It should be able to store up to 12,000 tons of radioactive materials.
