The mood among consumers in Switzerland continued to brighten slightly towards the end of the year. One reason for this is likely to have been the customs deal reached with the USA.(symbolic image)

The mood of Swiss consumers improved slightly in December compared to the previous month. The consumer sentiment index calculated by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) rose by 2.9 points compared to November to -30.7 from -33.8, as reported on Monday.

The barometer thus continued the slight increase seen in November. Compared to the same month last year, however, the index fell by 0.4 points. According to Seco, the sub-indices "past financial situation" and "time for major purchases" were above the 2024 level.
By contrast, the "expected economic development" and "expected financial situation" sub-indices were lower than a year ago.
The sentiment barometer recorded its lowest value in the past year in April at -42.4 points, shortly after US President Donald Trump announced the first tariff increases.
Consumer sentiment then brightened noticeably until July, before plummeting again to -39.9 points in August, coinciding with the US President's 39% tariff hike against Switzerland.
The consumer sentiment index is published monthly on the basis of a survey conducted by Seco. The data has been collected since 1972. In contrast to many common economic indicators, consumer sentiment refers to private households.
