Swiss consumer sentiment improved slightly in September compared to the previous month. The consumer sentiment index calculated by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) rose from -39.9 to -36.5 points compared to August.

The sentiment barometer thus recovered somewhat after two consecutive declines, but remained well below the long-term average, as Seco announced on Friday. The value was also 2.8 points lower than in the same month last year.

The slight improvement compared to the previous month is mainly due to a better assessment of the expected economic development.

Over the longer term, consumer sentiment is once again susceptible to fluctuations. After hitting a low in April (-42.4 points), it had brightened noticeably by July (-32.8) before plummeting in August, coinciding with US President Donald Trump's tariff hammer against Switzerland.

The consumer sentiment index is published monthly on the basis of a survey conducted by Seco. Data has been collected since 1972. Unlike many common economic indicators, consumer sentiment refers to private households.
