Consumer sentiment in Switzerland brightened slightly in July 2024 compared to the previous month. The monthly consumer sentiment index compiled by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) stood at -32 points after -37 points in June.

Compared to the previous year (July 2023), this is also around 5 points higher, as reported by Seco on Friday. The sub-indices "Expected economic development", "Past financial situation", "Expected financial situation" and "Time for major purchases" are above the previous year's values. By contrast, the "Job security" sub-index, for example, is significantly below the previous year's level.

The index reached its lowest point to date in October 2023, when it slipped to just under -53 points. The last time it was clearly higher was at the beginning of 2022.

Since the beginning of 2024, the consumer sentiment index has been based on monthly surveys by Seco instead of the previous quarterly surveys. These are conducted continuously using online questionnaires, with 2928 people taking part last month.
