According to Federal Councillor Albert Rösti, the continuous widening of the A1 highway to six lanes is off the table. Last Sunday, the people rejected two sections on precisely this axis. "This means that the entire expansion is no longer possible," he told the NZZ am Sonntag.

The transport minister now considers a motion pending in parliament and supported by the Federal Council for the expansion of the A1 between Lausanne and Geneva as well as Bern and Zurich to at least six lanes to be no longer feasible for the time being. "We can't do that now," said the SVP Federal Councillor in an interview. In legal terms, the proposal is still valid, as is the Federal Council's position. "But politically it looks different."
The Minister of Transport and Energy expressed his concern about the difficulties of major transport projects or energy buildings. "We have a lot to build in the future. We need more power lines, we need new power plants, we need to increase rail and road capacity."
Rösti continues to believe in majorities for new large-scale projects. "When the pressure is high, the population is usually prepared to take the necessary measures." This will also be the case for infrastructure and electricity.
At the same time, Rösti explained that he sometimes has the impression that the world has become more selfish. "Everyone is looking out for their own backyard." The Federal Councillor therefore called for confidence and appealed for a sense of togetherness.
