The Federal Office of Armaments (Armasuisse) has given its authorization, the Federal Office announced on Tuesday. The new system will be able to protect the population from medium-range air threats. The procurement is part of the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI) and is an important milestone for Switzerland's integrated air defense.
According to Armasuisse, with five IRIS-T SLM systems, the Swiss Armed Forces are closing a key capability gap and strengthening their resilience against modern airborne threats. The system complements the procurement of the F-35A fighter aircraft and the Patriot ground-based air defense system for longer ranges. According to current planning, the first fire unit will be delivered from the end of 2028.
