Coop is testing new possibilities for more sustainable food with two start-ups. Among other things, the retailer is testing chocolate based on lab-grown cocoa and mushroom-based meat alternatives.

To this end, Coop is working with the Israeli cocoa start-up Kokomodo and the German company Pacifico Biolabs, as detailed in a press release issued on Friday to mark the tenth anniversary of the open innovation platform Kickstart. Coop wants to use it to develop environmentally friendly protein sources and chocolate products.

Kickstart Innovation has facilitated over 400 innovation deals between start-ups and established companies since 2015. The young companies have received over 3.1 billion francs in financing. Coop once also launched its collaboration with meat substitute manufacturer Planted within this framework.
