According to the news agency Ritzau, the Copenhagen police received numerous calls as a result. As the Swedish newspaper "Sydsvenskan" reported, the earthquake was also felt in the southern Swedish city of Malmö. "This is a relatively large quake, both by Danish and Swedish standards," seismologist Björn Lund from Uppsala University told Sydsvenskan.
The strongest quake since 2012
The quake was also reportedly felt in Odense on the Danish island of Funen, around 170 kilometers west of Copenhagen. This was reported by the radio station DR. In a post on X, the Civil Protection Agency for the capital region wrote that no personal injuries had been reported so far.
Tine Larsen from the Danish geological research institute GEUS told Ritzau that aftershocks were to be expected. However, these would probably be so light "that no one would notice them", Larsen said.
Earthquakes are relatively rare in Denmark. Wednesday's quake was the strongest in or near Denmark since 2012, when a magnitude 4.3 earthquake was measured, according to GEUS. When it shook in Sweden, around 65 kilometers east of Copenhagen with a magnitude of 4.8 in 2008, this was also felt in the area around the Danish capital.
