A well-known head of the Corsican mafia was shot dead on his doorstep this morning. The public prosecutor's office confirmed to the newspaper "Corse Matin" that an investigation had been opened into the murder of an organized gang and criminal association.

The victim, known to the judicial authorities, died from his gunshot wounds - according to media reports, right on his doorstep in Bastia, Corsica. No further details were initially released.

France and Corsica in particular are repeatedly the scene of similar violent crimes. The man killed was a founding member of the "Brise de mer" gang, which had dominated organized crime on the island for almost 30 years, according to the "Corse Matin" report.

If the suspicion is confirmed, it would be the fifth act of retaliation in Corsica this year.
