A coup is looming in Bolivia: soldiers took over the square in front of the Bolivian government palace on Wednesday. Armored vehicles rammed the doors of the government palace in the city of La Paz, as seen on Bolivian television. "We condemn the irregular mobilizations of some units of the Bolivian army. Democracy must be respected", Bolivian President Luis Arce announced via Platform X. "We cannot allow coup attempts."

Former Bolivian President Evo Morales also denounced the military's movement in Murillo Square in front of the palace in a message on X, describing it as a "planned coup d'état". Bolivia's Vice President David Choquehuanca said: "We denounce before the international community that this is a coup d'état against our democratically elected government in Bolivia."

"Enough of the impoverishment of our homeland, enough of the humiliation of the military. We have come to express our discontent," said Juan José Zúñiga, general commander of the army. Speaking to media representatives, he spoke of "attacks on democracy" without elaborating.
