The ailing power grid on the Caribbean island of Cuba has once again completely collapsed. The nationwide power outage was caused by a fault in a substation, the Ministry of Energy announced on Platform X. Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz said that they were working non-stop to restore the electricity.

At the end of last year, Cuba experienced three island-wide blackouts within less than two months. Large parts of the outdated infrastructure in the socialist island state are in poor condition. As a result, power plants repeatedly go offline and have to be repaired on a makeshift basis. Power outages are part of everyday life. The government attributes the crisis to the US trade embargo that has been in place for more than 60 years.

The most recent outage occurred in the evening at 8.15 p.m. local time, when demand for electricity is particularly high. The state utility UNE can only generate around half of the electricity required nationwide. This is why parts of the population are repeatedly without electricity for hours at a time, even during normal times.
