Millions of people in Cuba are without electricity for the second day in a row. On Sunday morning (local time), the stabilization of the outdated power grid in the socialist Caribbean state was making slow progress, according to the state utility UNE.

So far, around 970 megawatts have been restored nationwide, less than a third of the normal electricity demand at peak times, according to the electricity company. In the capital Havana, only 19 percent of the connections were supplied with electricity again.

The blackouts are affecting the daily lives of Cubans

The blackout was triggered by a breakdown at a substation on Friday evening. It is the fourth nationwide blackout in five months on the island with around ten million inhabitants. People are charging their cell phones on the street if they can find sockets with power and are looking for ice to keep their food from spoiling, as the news portal "14 y medio" reported.

Large parts of the island's outdated infrastructure are in poor condition. As a result, power plants repeatedly go offline and have to be repaired on a makeshift basis. Power cuts are part of everyday life. The government attributes the crisis to the US trade embargo that has been in place for more than 60 years, which, among other things, makes it difficult to import oil from abroad.
