A violent cyclone is heading for the north of Australia: "Fina" is currently a category 1 tropical cyclone, but according to the weather bureau it could gain strength and possibly become a category 3 storm by Saturday. This would mean gusts of 165 to 224 kilometers per hour. Especially around the city of Darwin in the Northern Territory, there is a threat of heavy rainfall and strong winds, which could cause flooding and damage.

According to the authorities, several schools in remote communities have been closed as a precautionary measure. Charles Darwin University also suspended its operations. Sporting events were canceled and several ferry services were suspended. Schools in Darwin itself remain open for the time being.

Memories of cyclone "Tracy"

In an interview with Radio ABC Darwin, emergency manager Kirsten Engels urged people not to panic, but to take precautions. "We want people to be prepared and take this really seriously now because this weather system can bring destructive winds and heavy rainfall," she said. "Fina" is expected to move out of the region on Sunday evening.

The last time a more severe cyclone hit Darwin was in 2018: "Marcus" toppled trees and caused power outages in tens of thousands of homes. On December 24 and 25, 1974, cyclone "Tracy" almost completely devastated Darwin. The storm reached category 4 on the five-level scale. At least 66 people lost their lives and almost 150 others were seriously injured. Tens of thousands of people were left homeless.
