The giant statue of Mother Homeland in Volgograd is one of Russia's most important war memorials - now a man has died in its head. The memorial to the Battle of Stalingrad confirmed the incident in the 52-metre-high figure, as reported by the Russian state news agency Tass.

According to the report, the 68-year-old suffered a heart attack while visiting the walk-in monument at a dizzying height. All help had come too late. The memorial denied media reports that the ascent was illegal. The visit had been organized for participants of a scientific conference.

The statue "Mother Homeland Calls" on Mamayev Hill, erected in 1967, commemorates the battles for Stalingrad in 1942/43 during the Second World War. The tip of her raised sword rises 85 meters into the air.
