The death toll from the devastating floods in southern Thailand is rising. In total, at least 33 people have died since the floods began, media reported, citing the government in Bangkok. Most of them drowned, others died due to electrocution in the water or landslides. Dozens more people were injured.

Which regions are affected?
The province of Songkhla, including the town of Hat Yai on the border with Malaysia, has been particularly badly affected by the floods. In total, there is severe flooding in 9 of the 14 southern provinces. The Bangkok Post newspaper reported that almost 2.8 million people had been affected by the floods. Hundreds of thousands of houses have been flooded and tens of thousands of people are homeless.
This was preceded by record rainfall. The newspaper "Khaosod" spoke of the worst flooding in the region for decades.
Important commercial metropolis
The authorities are already fearing massive economic losses: The affected region is normally popular with tourists from other Asian countries. The large city of Hat Yai, with more than 190,000 inhabitants, is also considered an important commercial center.
Many residents have had to save themselves on their roofs over the past few days because there was no other escape route. Among others, the military is helping with the rescue operations. Relief supplies were dropped from helicopters because the desperate population had hardly any food left. "The only positive news is that, according to the weather bureau, the rain is expected to subside at least until Monday," reported the Bangkok Post.
