Deaths and damage caused by typhoon "Kajiki" in Vietnam

According to the authorities, 18,000 trees were uprooted and around 330 electricity pylons were knocked down. More than 1.3 million households across the country were without electricity. In the capital Hanoi, torrential rain caused severe flooding, bringing city traffic to a partial standstill.

Warning of landslides

"Kajiki" has since weakened to a tropical depression over Laos, but the authorities continued to warn of possible flash floods and landslides as significant amounts of rain were expected.

Around 300,000 people in coastal regions had been urged to seek safety in advance. Several central coastal provinces had taken emergency measures and suspended all shipping traffic in advance. Some airports in the region were closed and dozens of flights were canceled. Over 16,500 soldiers and more than 100,000 aid workers were on standby for rescue operations.

The authorities had compared the force of "Kajiki" in advance with the devastating typhoon "Yagi", which claimed around 300 lives and caused severe damage in Vietnam last year.

Thailand also expects heavy rain

Meanwhile, Thailand is also bracing itself: the weather service has warned of heavy rainfall, initially particularly in the north with the well-known cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, as well as in the north-east. Meteorologists are expecting heavy rain and flooding in many parts of the country until Wednesday.
